Meteora – Suspended in the Air

Stunning aerial view of Meteora's ancient monasteries atop rock formations in Greece.

Meteora is a place where geology and spirituality meet. Massive stone pillars rise from the plain of Thessaly, crowned by monasteries that seem to float in the sky. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photogenic places in Greece.

⛪ The Monasteries

Six monasteries are still active and open to visitors. Each offers a unique glimpse into monastic life and history:

  • Great Meteoron: The largest and oldest monastery, featuring an impressive museum and ossuary.
  • Varlaam: Known for its beautiful frescoes and the large net tower used to haul up supplies.
  • Roussanou: A smaller nunnery accessible by a bridge, offering lovely gardens and views.
  • Holy Trinity (Agia Triada): Famous for being featured in the James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only”. It requires a steep climb but rewards you with seclusion.

🌅 Chasing the Sunset

Watching the sunset in Meteora is an unforgettable experience. As the sun dips below the Pindos Mountains, the rocks glow in shades of orange and purple.

  • Sunset Rock (Psaropetra): The most popular spot, located between Varlaam and Great Meteoron. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot!
  • Alternative Spots: Pull-offs along the main road near Roussanou also offer fantastic, less crowded views.

👞 Practical Tips

  • Dress Code: Strict dress codes apply. Men must wear long trousers, and women must wear long skirts (wraps are often available at the entrance).
  • Timing: Check the opening days for each monastery as they vary. Start early (around 9 AM) to beat the tour buses.
  • Hiking: If you’re fit, walk the ancient trails that connect the monasteries for a different perspective.
